Quote for Tuesday Jun 5

Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.– Kurt Vonnegut

This is a very interesting quote and on first response I have to say that I disagreed.

But then I thought about it.

It’s not out of the norm or realm of possiblity to dislike a book but to absolutely vehement hate to the point of rage and loathing is a bit extreme in my opinion. I have had books that I have read and read for review that I could barely get through. I disliked the book or the authors voice, writing style, pace or plot for that book but it wasn’t that big of a deal to me.

Now would I trash a book - no. Or worse yet the author - again no.

I simply state my opinion and give examples as to why I felt this way. As a writer I cringe at some bad reviews and hope that when I put my work out there that everyone will love it and it will get nothing but glowing reviews. But is that realistic? No. It’s crazy in fact. I know that not everyone will like my work. I accept it and expect it.

I think what gets me more is the authors who feel the need to defend themselves, their writing or their work. And that’s their right of course but it’s not necessary or even wise in some cases because tempers flare and words fly across the keyboard and onto a blog post or forum and things can be taken out of context.

So what is the right response? Thank you for reading my book. I appreciate your opinion while I disagree with it. I hope you will try my next book and have a better experience.

Truthfully though, I don’t know because it’s easy to say that now. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

So what are you thoughts?
